What is Shopify theme customization?
Short answer: It is changing your store's theme so it fits your brand and sells better. That ranges from colors and section order in the theme editor to new sections and structural changes written in Liquid, Shopify's templating language.
A Shopify theme controls how every page of your storefront is laid out. Customization works at three levels: settings (colors, fonts, images and content in the theme editor), sections and templates (adding, removing and rearranging blocks of a page), and code (new sections, features and fixes written in Liquid, CSS and JavaScript). The first level needs no developer. The other two usually do.
It is not the same as installing a new theme, building an app or migrating platforms. If you want to try the no-code route first, read our guide on customizing a Shopify store without coding. For theme ideas, see our picks of the best Shopify themes for D2C brands.
What do Shopify customization services include?
Short answer: We work on the parts of a theme that shape how shoppers browse and buy: templates, sections, product pages, navigation, mobile layout and speed. Each project is scoped to the pages that matter most to your sales.
| Area | What we do | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage and templates | Reorder, rebuild or add sections, rework the hero, announcement bar, navigation and footer to fit your brand. | Online Store 2.0 themes let you add and move sections on JSON templates. Shopify allows up to 25 sections per template. |
| Product pages | Gallery, variant and price display, delivery and returns information, trust blocks, description layout and cross-sells. | How far we can go without code depends on your theme. |
| Collection pages and navigation | Collection layout, filters, menus and mega menus so shoppers reach products in fewer clicks. | Filters and menus depend on how your products are tagged and organized, so we check that first. |
| Custom sections and blocks | New sections built in Liquid, such as size guides, comparison tables, bundle builders, FAQs and offer banners. | The number of blocks per section is set by the theme's designer, so we plan around your theme's limits. |
| Mobile layout | Spacing, tap targets, menus, sticky add-to-cart and checkout entry points, tested on real devices. | We review the mobile version first, because that is where most D2C traffic lands. |
| Speed | Image sizing, an audit of installed apps and script load, and code cleanup. | Speed also depends on your apps and content. See the speed section below. |
| Theme code | Liquid, CSS and JavaScript changes where the theme editor cannot do the job. | Shopify says code changes can be removed when a theme updates, so we document everything we add. |
Based on Shopify's help pages on sections and blocks and editing theme code, checked 20 October 2026. Shopify updates these pages, so we confirm the current limits at the start of each project.
Should you customize, redesign or switch themes?
Short answer: Customize when your theme is a good base, redesign when the page structure is holding sales back, and switch themes when the current base cannot support what you need. We recommend the smallest change that solves the problem.
| Option | What changes | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Customize your theme | Styling, section order, new sections, product page and navigation improvements. The theme stays. | Your store is close to right and needs a sharper brand fit or a few new features. Usually the smaller scope. |
| Redesign | The layout and structure of the key templates: homepage, product, collection and navigation. | The page structure itself is the problem, for example shoppers cannot find products or the product page is unclear. |
| Switch to a new theme | A different theme base, then customized and populated with your content. | Your current theme is old, heavily patched with code or apps, or cannot support the sections you need. |

Do you need a developer, an app or just the theme editor?
Short answer: Use the theme editor for colors, text, images and section order. Use an app for ready-made features. Hire a developer when you need a new section, a different page structure or a fix in the theme code.
| Change you want | Best tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Colors, fonts, logo, banner images | Theme editor | No code needed, and you stay in control. |
| Reorder or hide existing sections | Theme editor | Online Store 2.0 themes are built for this. |
| Reviews, subscriptions, loyalty, bundles | App, styled to match | A tested app is usually faster than custom code, but each app adds scripts to your pages. |
| A new section your theme does not have | Developer (Liquid) | It needs a custom section with its own settings and styles. |
| A different product page structure | Developer | It changes the template, not just the content. |
| Slow pages caused by old code and apps | Developer | It needs an audit of scripts, leftover code and images. |
- Theme editor first: Shopify advises editing theme code only when a change cannot be made with an app or the theme editor. We follow the same rule, so you keep the changes you can manage yourself
- Native sections over page builders: we prefer building sections into the theme, because every extra app adds scripts to your pages. If a page-builder app is the better fit for your team, we will say so. See the conversion cost of app overload
- Backups and documentation: Shopify recommends duplicating your theme before editing, which our process does by default, and we note every custom file we add so a future developer can pick it up
Need a custom app or integration rather than a theme change? See our Shopify app development service.
How does our theme customization process work?
Short answer: We scope in writing, agree a design direction, build on a duplicate theme, test on devices and browsers, then publish once you approve. Your live store is not changed until that last step.
Brief and scope
We review your store, goals and the pages that matter most, then write down what is included and quote a fixed price.
Design direction
We share a direction based on your brand assets for approval before development starts, so you are not surprised later.
Build on a duplicate theme
We duplicate your theme and work on the copy. Shopify allows up to 20 themes in your admin, so we check there is room first. Your live theme stays untouched.
Review and QA
You review the updated design. We test across devices and browsers and fix issues before launch.
Publish and support
When you approve, we publish. Shopify moves your previous theme to Draft themes, so nothing is lost and you can switch back. We provide 30 days of post-launch support for final tweaks.
Will theme changes affect your speed and SEO?
Short answer: They can, in either direction. Changing a theme does not change your product and collection URLs, but it can change speed, headings, structured data and internal links, so we check all four and measure before and after.
- Measure first: we record your speed and Core Web Vitals scores before we change anything, then compare after
- URLs stay put: Shopify sets product, collection and page URLs separately from the theme, so a theme change does not move them
- Headings and structure: we keep one clear H1 per page and a logical heading order, because themes sometimes get this wrong
- Structured data: we check that product schema and breadcrumbs still output correctly after the change
- Images: we size and format images for the layouts we build
- Apps and scripts: we check which installed apps load code on your storefront and flag the ones that cost the most
- Code cleanup: we remove unused sections, styles and leftover code from old apps
Speed is the whole project for some stores. If that is you, see our speed optimization service, our Shopify speed optimization guide or our conversion rate optimization service.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
Short answer: You get a fixed price in writing within 2 working days of the audit call. We do not list one price here because a few section changes and a full redesign are very different jobs.
What moves the price and the timeline:
- Number of templates: homepage only, or homepage plus product, collection and cart pages
- Custom sections: each new section needs design, Liquid code and testing
- Your theme: Online Store 2.0 themes are easier to extend than older ones
- Content readiness: brand assets, copy and product photos ready on day one keep the plan on schedule
- Integrations: reviews, subscriptions, bundles and loyalty apps need to be styled to match
See how we quote on our pricing page. Our standard store launch takes 2 to 3 weeks, and the proposal for a theme project gives a dated plan for your scope.

Is Shopify theme customization right for you?
Short answer: Hire a theme developer when the change needs code, custom sections or a structural redesign. Use the theme editor when it does not.
A good fit
Hire a theme developer if
- You want sections your theme does not have
- Your product pages need a new structure
- Your store works but looks like a default theme
- You are replacing page-builder apps with native sections
- You want a developer to document and own the theme code
Probably not
Do it yourself if
- You only need new colors, fonts or images
- You are reordering existing sections
- You are editing text, banners or menus
- A free theme with default settings already does the job

Frequently asked questions
What is Shopify theme customization?
Shopify theme customization means changing how your store's theme looks and works: layouts, sections, product pages, navigation, styling and code. It can be done in the theme editor without code, or by a developer in Liquid when you need something the editor cannot do.
What do Shopify theme customization services include?
Cognito IT Consultancy customizes homepage and template layouts, product and collection pages, navigation, custom sections, mobile layout and speed. We scope the work in writing before we start, so you know what is in and what is not.
How much do Shopify theme customization services cost?
The price depends on how many templates change, how many custom sections you need, your theme and any app styling. Any price given without seeing your theme is a guess. We quote a fixed price in writing within 2 working days of your audit call.
How long does Shopify theme customization take?
It depends on scope. A few section changes and a full redesign are very different projects, so our proposal gives a dated plan for your scope. For comparison, a standard Cognito IT store launch takes 2 to 3 weeks.
Will customization affect my live store?
No. We duplicate your theme and do all the work on the copy, so your live store stays as it is. When you approve the result, we publish it. Shopify moves your previously published theme to Draft themes, so you can switch back if you need to.
What is the difference between theme customization and a redesign?
Customization keeps your theme and changes sections, styling and templates. A redesign changes the layout and structure of the key templates, sometimes on a new theme. We recommend the smaller option when it will do the job, and explain why in the proposal.
Can I customize my Shopify theme without a developer?
Yes, for many changes. The theme editor handles colors, fonts, images, text and section order without code, and apps add features. Shopify advises editing code only when the editor or an app cannot do the job, and suggests a Shopify Partner for custom code.
Will changing my Shopify theme affect SEO?
Changing a theme does not change your product, collection or page URLs, which Shopify sets separately. It can change headings, structured data, internal links and speed, so we check those before publishing and compare speed scores before and after.
Which Shopify themes do you work on?
Themes from the Shopify Theme Store, free or paid, themes you bought elsewhere, and custom themes. Newer Online Store 2.0 themes are the easiest to extend with sections. Older themes can need more custom code, and we say so in the proposal.
Will I lose my customizations when the theme updates?
Possibly. Shopify says that if your code changes are incompatible with a theme update, they are removed in the updated copy. Changes made in the theme editor are less exposed. We document every custom file we add, so changes can be reapplied.
Will a new theme design increase my conversion rate?
We cannot promise a number. A clearer layout, better product pages and a faster mobile experience remove common reasons shoppers leave, and we aim every change at those. If conversion is your main goal, our CRO service tests changes against your own data.
Do you provide support after launch?
Yes. Every Cognito IT project includes 30 days of post-launch support for fixes and final tweaks. We also document any custom code so your team or a future developer can work with it.
